MPO Gives Houston County $2.1 For Roadwork

Houston County continues to grow and that means more traffic comes along too.
Roadwork costs a lot of taxpayer dollars, which is why 2.1 million dollars in stimulus money from the metropolitan planning organization is coming in handy.
"It's 100% money. It will cover all the costs. In addition, that money is paying for some of the work the city is doing too on Honeysuckle and some other areas. 100% money is always good. We can use that" says Mark Culver, Houston County Commission Chairman.
Resurfacing will eventually take place on Jordan Avenue in Cowarts and on Brannon Stand Road from Fortner street to Highway 52.
"The Brannon Stand Road project was one that was on our long range plan that we were going to do anyway but this allowed us to move it forward several years and get it done. This is a different project- but in conjunction- at Fortner and Brannon Stand also we will signalize it and put in turn lanes" says Culver.
There was consideration made when choosing which intersections would get the work. The area that I am standing in right now in Cowarts has seen a lot of industrial growth over the years. Brannon Stand Road and Highway 52 are 2 of the busiest traveled roads in Houston County.
"It's kind of like the roof of your house- when it starts cracking and leaking it creates more problems underneath and we try to avoid that. We grade our roads every year and the ones with the lowest grades we resurface so it won't become a total rebuild job, just a resurfacing job"
Meanwhile, work continues on the Ardilla intersection on cottonwood road.
The city, county and state collaborated on that project; it is expected to be finished in several months.
Culver says that because the county workers are proactive with their roadwork, Houston County has been able to maintain some of the best county roads in the state.
