BIG-TIME BLOWOUTS
UNDATED (AP) - The ladies of Houston Baptist are losers -- big time. But their coach wouldn't change a thing. The Huskies got hammered 104-35 by Duke on Friday night, then got demolished 109-30 by TCU on Sunday. Coach Todd Buchanan tells the AP it was an "incredible" experience for his team. He's finding a big silver lining in the dark cloud of the scores. He says when his young players are juniors and seniors, they'll be ready for the NCAA tournament. The home court crowd of Houston Baptist did have something to cheer, though. The Huskies led the Blue Devils 2-0 just after tipoff.
POLICE STATION POT
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The LAPD didn't have to go far to bust an indoor pot farm. It's next door to the Topanga police station. Authorities say officers could smell pot in the station's parking lot. Officers searched the industrial building after getting a warrant. Police say the pot growing operation included lights, automated irrigation and a ventilation system. The pot farmers had been growing the illegal weed for at least eight months. Police haven't released the names of the suspects.
ENTERING WRONG HOUSE
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police in Des Moines say after a night on the town, a couple came home. But the house wasn't theirs. Shantel Diane Morrison and Joshua Aaron Pray are now charged with burglary. According to officers, the couple forced open the door of a house they thought was their own. Police say the actual homeowners found Pray asleep on the couch while Morrison was getting undressed upstairs. Both ran away. Officers were able to trace the plates on their van. Police add they believe both were drunk.
GOLD FILLINGS
HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) - Your big mouth may be worth big bucks. Now that the price of gold is sky high, people are cashing in on their choppers. Bobby Heiser is the owner of Crescent Jewelry in Hannibal, Mo. He says people are coming in every day with gold teeth to sell. Some even have whole bridges with teeth still attached. Heiser tells a local paper (Courier-Post) he'll pay a little less if he has the yucky job of separating the gold from the teeth. The price of gold has now topped $1,100 an ounce.
JC PENNEY-CATALOGS
PLANO, Texas (AP) - Lots of folks will have to find some new bathroom reading material. J.C. Penney is pulling the plug on its "big book" catalogs. The company says consumer habits have changed. So, with more people browsing and buying online, J.C. Penney says there's less of a demand for its twice-a-year mega catalogs. Elimination of the big books will save a lot of trees, too. J.C. Penney officials figure their paper use will be cut 25 percent to 30 percent next year.
TAX-FREE GUNS
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - There will be another shotgun weekend for gun lovers in South Carolina. The state is giving gun buyers a tax break beginning the day after Thanksgiving. State and local sales taxes on handguns, rifles and shotguns will be waived for 48 hours. But people buying ammo or accessories like a scope for that special someone will still have to pay taxes, which can total 9 percent. State economic officials estimate last year's "Second Amendment Weekend" saved gun buyers about $15,000.
