ATTALLA, Ala. (AP) - Officials have finished a three-year project to clean up a massive dump that contained millions of old tires in northeast Alabama.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management will hold a news conference Thursday to announce the completion of the work,
which began in August 2006.
The cleanup centered around the former Four Star Scrap Tire Wholesale Brokerage in Attalla, which is located in Etowah County.
The business shut down and the owner abandoned the site, filing for
bankruptcy.
The illegal tire dump prompted legislation that created the Scrap Tire Environmental Quality Act, which levied a $1 disposal fee for every tire sold in the state. The Attalla site was the first to be cleaned up under the law.
