MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former Alabama State Docks Director Robert Milton Hope is being remembered for his long service to the port of Mobile.

Hope died Wednesday at his Mobile home. He was 84. He had a long
career at the State Docks, including serving as director from 1976
to 1987 under Govs. George Wallace and Fob James.

David Cooper, vice chairman of the Alabama State Port Authority, said Hope's sage advice and good judgment gave Mobile's waterfront community a competitive edge. Current Docks Director Jimmy Lyons
said Hope was a consummate professional who developed the McDuffie Coal Terminal during his tenure.

Hope's funeral is scheduled for noon Friday at Pine Crest Funeral Home in Mobile.
