Is global warming real? How big is my carbon footprint? Can “greening” my life save my hard earned “green”? Everyday we hear the phrase “Go Green” and if you’re like me, you think about how individual actions will impact our lives, communities and our planet. No matter what your opinion on the so-called “Inconvenient Truth,” we can all do a little something to put money back in our wallets and conserve at the same time.
What that, for the next few days, I will be sharing some tried-and-true tips I’ve learned to save money, conserve and, maybe even save Mother Earth. The best part, these are entertaining ideas the kids will love to try and ideas that you can get the whole family involved in that might even make you a little healthier.
And I want to hear your tips too – just post them as comments and we’ll see how many energy saving tips we can generate and how much “green” we can take to the bank!
Tip #1: Get the whole family involved.
Grab the kids, gather ‘round to monitor and get their opinions on my ideas, then check out Disney’s Friends for Change (www.Disney.com/FriendsForChange). It’s a comprehensive challenge that teaches kids how they can better the environment and help the family save money by conserving around the house.
Tip #2: Cool by numbers
Set your thermostat a few degrees warmer when you’re out (approx. 78). At night, drop down (approx. 74) and use fans. Check out these numbers:
Your average air conditioning unit uses 112 kWh per month, a ceiling fan, uses about 9 per month. The savings can be as much as $200 a year, according to a northeast public service utility group. Engerystar.gov also recommends making sure your fans are Energy Star approved to save you an additional few hundred dollars a year.
Tip#3: Try compact fluorescent next time your incandescent bulbs burn out. According to EnergyStar, they last an average of seven years and use 75% less energy – saving you a few bucks every month!
Tip#4: “Smart” power strips can help you save money. Lets face it, none of us remember to unplug our cell phone chargers, curling irons, printer, computer, microwave, video game consol and everything else every day, but we can buy a reminder. Dubbed “smart” power strips, these surge protectors can also sense when a devise is not being used and shut off its consumption to save you cash and maybe even extend the life of your machine.
Tomorrow, I’ll introduce you to the Million Car Carbon Campaign and give you tips on saving water. Later this week, some homemade house-cleaning recipes that won’t only help you save time and money, but could also improve your health! Stay tuned! And don’t forget to send me your ideas too!
