Day three in Hoover... Auburn's turn to talk. The media picked the Tigers to win the division. Tuberville seemed surprised, since he still doesn't have a quarterback who's "won" the job. Although neither of his guys are transfers from Harvard, so that puts them ahead of LSU...in football, not Organic Chemistry. Tubs emphasized getting a better start to the season this time around, after last year's rough beginning, i.e. early losses to South Florida and Mississippi State, not to mention a horrendous performance against K-State in the season opener. Never underestimate the vulnerability of a young, new offensive line. (they had 4 new starters on the line last year) Then defensive end Sen'derrick Marks livened things up with his anecdote of former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp giving him a forearm to the face as Marks came off the field after making a big play in a game last year. It was Muschamp's way of showing his appreciation (yikes), and from that exchange Marks eloquently told all of us, "after that I wasn't 'krunk' anymore". That means he wasn't as fired up as he was before getting drilled in the face by his coach cause it hurt. 21st century vernacular--get used to it. (by the way, Tim Tebow is always krunk)
I then got confused when I saw cameras following around some guy who I thought was an SEC worker helping players get where they needed to go. Then I realized that this "handler" was in fact, Kentucky's best receiver this year. He's shorter than I am, and looks 18. Who knows, maybe Dicky Lyons, Jr. will turn out to be the next Tim Dwight, but it took me by surprise.
Bobby Petrino seemed a little uneasy with all the cameras following him around. Odds are pretty good he DIDN'T call Tommy Tuberville for advice on how to deal with his first Media Days experience. As far as his team, I think they're the biggest question mark in the league this year--yeah, go out on a limb! Who knows what to expect from them. Like Auburn, they will have an entirely new offensive look.
Other tidbits from the Days: Wynfrey Hotel charges $9.00 per day for parking for this thing. Ouch. Thank goodness for expense forms. They were out of Alabama media guides late into the first day. RTR! ESPNs/"The Bachelor's" Jesse Palmer was there. He was wearing loafers with no socks. Is that "his thing"? Did the women on "the Bachelor" realize his foot odor as he was handing them the roses? Did he have any pleasant exchanges with his former coach Steve Spurrier? Does Spurrier always use the phrase, "you're no Noah Brendise" everytime he seems Palmer? Things to ponder until next time...
