Wow, we knew the SEC wouldn't light the college basketball world on fire this season. But gimme a break! At least Georgia is doing what it was expected to do, and that's lose...frequently. Everyone else--pick a side! Suddenly Ole Miss is finding its rhythm, winning three straight AFTER losing three in a row, including once to Alabama. Chris Warren who? Kentucky's free-falling (they've lost three in a row, two at Rupp) Jodie Meeks who?! Tennessee and Florida are jekyl-and-hyde depending on the given day. LSU somehow continues to crank out wins with incredible athletes but no real leadership...all respects to Marcus Thornton. Maybe Trent Johnson is the only leader they need. And it's not worth the frustration trying to figure out Arkansas. How does a team who knocked off Texas and Oklahoma only have one SEC win through its first seven games? Anyway, two good games next Tuesday and Wednesday--Florida at Kentucky, and LSU at Mississippi State. Are Florida and LSU really the best teams in their divisions? I've seen them each play some horrendously bad games...but, all the others have too. Right now Tennessee, LSU and Florida are the only real NCAA tournament-worthy teams. MSU, Kentucky and South Carolina could go either way. And I know everyone's in love with Jodie Meeks for the league's player of the year, but I really like Devan Downey right now. All he does is give his team a chance to win every night out. He's THE go-to guy. Reminds me a little bit of Randolph Childress in the way he plays, though Downey doesn't have Tim Duncan working the blocks for him. That being said, I'm sure others will make a run. Marcus Thornton's great, as is Nick Calathes. Bottom line is, it's the halfway point, and realistically any team in the top seven could win the league. |
