Forget the two turnovers. Forget the botched snaps out of the Wildcat formation from a center who's never really played before. Forget the one special teams breakdown and one pass protection breakdown.If you can forget all of that, simply remember that Alabama was BETTER in the fourth quarter than the first. Quite a change from last season, eh? Granted, Virginia Tech wore down by the end of the game. A team like, say, Florida won't. But the Tide got what it wanted out of its season opener. A little vindication for the way 2008 ended. A chance to show their fortitude in crunch time. And it worked. On national TV. Where to go from here? Interestingly, Nick Saban didn't read the riot act to the cameras in the post-game like he did after the Clemson beat-down. No mention of "We haven't arrived" or "it's just one game!" Could it be because he believes he's got a special team? He's certainly got a load of special players. And the newbies (O-Line), you assume, are only gonna get better as the season goes on. So again, I ask how good can they be? By the end of the season, maybe the best college team Nick Saban's ever coached? That doesn't correlate to a certain number of wins, mind you. But as far as skills, cohesiveness, and physicality, it could be something special. Of course, it's only been one game... |
