WASHINGTON (AP) - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says
when she was first lady, she helped open the Mother Teresa Home for
Infant Children to reduce the need for abortions.

At Thursday's National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, Clinton recalled the 1994 breakfast, where Mother Teresa delivered a strong anti-abortion message.

Clinton said that when the two met afterwards, Mother Teresa said she knew that they "had a shared conviction about adoption being vastly better as a choice for unplanned or unwanted babies."

At Mother Teresa's urging, Clinton said she went to work establishing the new orphanage.

It opened the following year in Washington, with the revered nun in attendance.

Mother Teresa died in 1997. In 2003, she was beatified -- the last step before possible sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church.
