GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida sheriff's office is using Facebook to catch people with outstanding warrants.
Alachua sheriff's Lt. Steve Maynard says they hope publicizing the names and pictures of wanted men and women will create peer
pressure to make some people turn themselves in.
The office has a backlog of 14,000 outstanding warrants.
Maynard says he got the idea from another agency, whose Facebook traffic rose astronomically after they posted warrants.
Not all photos will be shown at once.
The sheriff's page will rotate a sampling of fugitives each Monday, and provide a link for viewers who might know them.
Maynard says the system allows people to send that information anonymously, if they prefer.
