Environmental group still does not want coal plant

Another public hearing has been scheduled for a proposed coal-fired electrical power plant in Early County, Georgia.
The 2-billion dollar and 1,200-mega-watt facility has been a subject of controversy ever since it was proposed nearly 10-years ago.
Opponents say the long-term economic benefits don't outweigh the potential health and environment risks.
"We have to look at where can we have development that will support people for the long term. This coal plant will not do that. It's also extremely financially risky. One of the things some people don't realize is that this particular company LS Power pulled out of three coal plants just this year," said Midge Sweet with Georgians for Smart Energy.
The public is invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday from 5 'til 6 pm at the Early County High School auditorium.
Georgians for Smart Energy and Citizens group and other environmental groups from across the state are expected to attend.
After this session, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division will conduct a public hearing on the Longleaf Energy Station.
