The man who tried to kill President Reagan wants to leave a psychiatric hospital more often and be allowed to travel farther away.
John Hinckley shot Reagan in 1981 and has been living at a Washington psychiatric hospital since he was found criminally insane for the attack.
Now Hinckley is asking to expand some unsupervised visits with his parents. Currently, he can see them only in the Washington area. But his lawyers are asking a judge to let Hinckley travel about three hours south to visit his parents in their home in Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition, they'd like him to spend five days at a time with his family twice a month.
His attorneys say Hinckley ultimately wants to move out of the hospital and live with his parents full time, and this would be part of a transition.
A judge denied a similar request by Hinckley last year.
