Ozark Police have been busy cleaning up their town, ridding it of crime and drugs.

Last Wednesday's drug bust in a local apartment complex showed them they're heading in the right direction.

Ozark Police Chief Tony Spivey said, "This is just an effort to rid our community of drugs [and] the people that engage in drug activity."

Ozark Police arrested three people from Ozark Villa Apartments Wednesday.

Twenty-six-year-old David Lee Barnes, 21-year-old Jeremy John Dickerson and 31-year-old Marilyn D. Houston were taken to the Dale County Jail.

"The execution of that search warrant led to the seizure of 100 grams of cocaine and two grams of marijuana," Chief Spivey added.

Residents at Ozark Villa Apartments didn't want to comment on the subject for fear of jeopardizing their safety. However, they do say they have seen a lot of traffic go in and out of the complex and some even say they could smell the drugs through their vents.

Employees with the complex say they have a live-in officer who patrols the area and are in the process of wiping out all drug activity.

Chief Spivey says getting the drugs out of the community is the first step to decreasing the city of crime. "We do find that drug activity leads to an increase of other crime; you know everything from basically homicide to robbery to theft. So, one way or the other, drug activity and other crimes seem to be hand and glove."

Chief Spivey says the busts have been successful. He is seeing a decrease in methamphetamines; however, the department is still working on bringing down the use of cocaine.

He also says more than $10,000 dollars worth of cocaine was seized along with a large amount of cash, which will most likely be turned back to the department to help continue the drug busts.

All three suspects were taken to the Dale County Jail and have since made bond.
