Thursday, local religious and business leaders held a meeting to discuss their feelings about electronic bingo coming to Houston County. A charity bingo facility is planned to be built within the Country Crossing entertainment project.

After speaking to Developer Ronnie Gilley over the phone on Friday, he made it clear that the project will not be crossing into this county unless charity bingo does.

Gilley has spent a lot of time putting together the plans for the future country music venue, Country Crossing.

The plans include a charity bingo facility and if the bingo goes, so does the entire project.

Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver said, "It’s a project that was presented to us. It’s not our job to tell them what to enter in the project. It made us need to look into the legalities."

Bingo is expected to raise millions of dollars for charities and help Country Crossing grow.

Because of the controversy, the project could slip out of the county commission's hands.

"I think we all did a lot of soul searching on this,” Culver said. “We all feel very positive on the decision that we made. We feel it’s an exciting project that will put us on the national tourism map."

Some feel losing the entire project would be a big loss to the community.

"I absolutely would be disappointed with the time that’s put in, 3000 families that could have had better jobs, hundreds of dollars in investment, lots of charity money. So [yes], I would be disappointed to lose out on that," Culver added.

Opponents of charity bingo fear that the amount of money may not be significant, and crime may come along with gambling.

"We’re going to continue to grow in Houston County, and when you grow, you have to deal with certain things,” Culver continued. “A crime in one of them; the traffic that is going on right now is one of them. Certainly as issues come up, we're going to do everything in our power to get them. We’re going to plan for them in advance and make this a successful project."

Even though Commissioner Curtis Harvey said he would like to revisit the decision, nothing will change unless the majority of the commission decides.

Culver has asked the developers to go back to investors and see if they could address the concerns that some citizens have.

As of now, there is nothing on next Monday’s agenda pertaining to the project.

I think the Country crossing sucks. It will help a county. If they can get Bingo why cant the state get Lottery & help the state. not just a town & a county. Suprised @ the Commisioners being so self centered Instead of trying to help the state. Neither do I agree with the Indians haveing Bingo. Paper Bingo only; Hope it falls to the bottom. I dont live In Houston county are Dothan, Al. Unfortunate it does get my money for shopping & Dr. For most all things. Want to let people know how I feel about the Bingo//Country Crossing. Hope it falls through.Have a vote on it.State vote;.

To all moaning about bingo,as one said stay out of Florida buying your Lottery Tickets and playing bingo & bringing your secret drinks house, tend to your own business.COME IN COUNTRY CROSSING.WE ALL NEED TO MET UP THAT WANTS IT AND STAND TOGETHER.I'M TRIED OF OUR LIFE BEING RUIN BY THE PEOPLE OF THE CHURHES.

On the proposed bingo-I am one of those citizens who feels we have enough problems to straighten out without adding more traffic and more crime to the area. We need to get these issue settled. I for one like our smaller town atmosphere. I don't care to be another Mobile, Montgomery, or Birmingham.

Where was all these people when they open Out on a Whim. What ever it is called. It is on 52 inside of the circle. Have you ever been in the back room and seen all the trash they sell in there. I have no use for it. But there are people that like it. So who am I to tell them they are wrong in selling it. Just like bingo. The holy rollers say they don't like it. Well hear this I love God and my county. And guess what.I love BINGO. And I have been known to go bet on a dog or two at the Ebro, Does that mean I will go to he** I DON'T THINK SO. Am I a HYPOCRITE. No God knows what I do and so does anyone else that know me. So get over your self and let the bingo come to Dothan. I will be there playing

Country Crossings will promote revenue starting in 2009 was my Commissioners take on our children and drugs in the houston county schools we need a resource officer now not 2009. If this project is shot down will the Commissioners not stand up for our future our children. Why should they be put second to anything in this county. The commission and the sheriff needs to worry about what is going on in these schools verses bingo. The Children are the future. Gangs and Drugs need to be stopped before they get any worse.

This is just so backwards, The churches don't want people playing bingo anywhere else. Just like the state they don't want open bingo or a lottery, yet let someone win and who has their hands out, the church for 10% and the state for their income tax. We live in one of the richest states but have a very poor tax support for education. With proper application of the income from bingo or a lottery, we could have better trained officers, and better schools, let alone a better standard of living for our residents. Thus lowering the crime rate. Come on Dothan get into the 21st century, its no longer the 1800's

I do not live right in Houston County but I know that this place can bring in the jobs we need to keep our young folks in the area to raise their families. I also see a lot of farmers stopping working the land. If we do not bring in some jobs all we are going to have is empty churches and empty towns. So instead of coming at it with saying that this will bring in more sin (which by the way it is all here already) how about addressing the sinners with the gospel. Maybe even having a dinner theater that features country gospel music to listen to while you digest the fruits of our Father's bounty.

If some of the people in Dothan think that everything is so "pristine and pure" from the taint of gambling and crime, they are mistaken. Bingo at this place isn't going to make any difference because the people who are going to gamble will someplace, and the criminals will commit crime someplace regardless of bingo at this place. And it is to benefit charities. You take a gamble at church bazaars...you buy something you gamble you will like it even tho you bought it because it was a church fundraiser. And about crime...I knew someone who embezzeled from a church...luckily, he was caught.

Why would any worth while politician care what the people think anyway!!!!,,None of them have up to this point in time!!!,,,Let the people that have to live with this decision VOTE on the issue that is the best way to decide if Houston County is ready for the side effects of a Branson type culture.

I don't think you really know what you are talking about. You should read more about Country Crossings before you open your mouth and insert your foot.

I GET SO SICK AND TIRED OF THE RELIGIOUS HYPOCRITES ATTEMPTING TO TELL ME HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE, IN A FREE COUNTRY!! I understand why they were thrown to the Lions. Enough is enough now! Stay in your churches and rule over your flock, I find all of you so call "Christians" intolerant of everything that doesn't concern you-mind your own business! It will be a crying shame if we allow this Taliban tribe to derail a project with such promise to enhance many of our lives. Growth comes with growing pain,ok. Crime? Now that's something you all need to pray over because it's getting bad with or without Country Crossing. I love GOD and I've learn to do his will and that's not playing chicken with the Train of progress. The world is changing preachermen, let us live free. I have just return from Afghanistan fighting a religious group gone unchecked for years, and if we continue giving in to you "Christians" we will eventually have to fight that battle here...enough said. HOOAH to Culver

There are already strip clubs and bars in Houston County so how does that play into this equation...? It's time for people of the Wiregrass to stand up and speak up. That is why the supposed mouth pieces of the churches are getting the attention, they are going to the county commission and speaking out. If you are for Country Crossing, make sure your county commissioners know. Be a mouthpiece as well. Personally I'm tired of religious leaders thinking they are somehow the mouthpiece for the community and community leaders just because they are preachers. Hey, ya'll don't want them? We've got 231 in Troy, come to Pike County, I'm sure our citizens and commission would welcome the income and jobs that are going to come with it.

Dothan in the past has always voted against majer projects that comes to town.If they let country crossings die Dothan will die, remember Columbas history,Gordens history. Will Dothan be history?

The reasoning many are using to justify legalized gambling (bingo) could also be used for strip clubs, prostitution, legalized drugs, and a host of other morally digressive activities that thankfully are still illegal. A decision of this magnitude, which will impact our community for generations to come, should not be left to a handful of elected officials who will be out of office soon. There should be a vote of the people, and especially the people that are going to end up living within 5 miles of this development. Many may welcome Country Crossings, but many also don't want it any where near their home and family. The county commission should hold a higher standard that reflects the morale fiber of this community, and not be blackmailed into accepting gambling in order to get a few more low paying jobs. The county commission needs to be spending time looking for industry that will pay its workers $15.00/hr. and up plus benefits, not $2.50/hr. plus tips.

This is not for the handful of people that are complaining - THEY HAVE THEIR FORTUNES!! A job is a job, whether the lowest salary of $5.85 or more. I applaud Chairman Culver, Ronnie Gilley, and the Houston County commissioners. The proposed site of 231 South is great as it will bring growth to that side of town. I will support Country Crossing. If I choose to participate in the electronic bingo will be my decision not anyone else's. Maybe the charity could also include college scholarships with a contract to return to Dothan to work for 4 or more years, especially as a physician. I welcome your vision Mr. Gilley, and to the Houston County Commission, I trust your decision for Country Crossing and ALL of the citizens of this great county!!

Posted by: michael Location: houston county on Mar 8, 2008 at 06:22 PM
Grow up you back woods people. Houston county needs to grow. If we left it up to you there would be nothing in Houston County. So grow up for a change.

George C Wallace probably said it best one day when asked why beer couldn't be bought on Sunday. His comment,"TO MANY DAM SOUTHERN BAPTIST." Mr. Gilley had a chance to move Country crossings to Florida instead opted to stay in Alabama. Crime well let me tell you if he was to build in panhadle of Florida the crime would come into Dothan any way. The crime rate around the the dog tracks in other counties is not there so the crime is not the problem. There has been a rash of robberies in the area and CC isn't here. But the money CC would bring in astronomical, the money is there if Houston County wants it. Why are business leaders worried it wel just put more money in there pockets they are stupid to oppose this, REDNECKS ideas is all I can say. This is a chance for the Wiregrass to shine to the world but all there is are arguements. Let it happen bring this I spoke with my good freind Lori Morgan she is excited to be coming in but now she is scared, these stars are putting up there money

Posted by: Fred Location: SEA on Mar 8, 2008 at 05:27 PM
Look at what happen to Orlando Dah!! Exactly look what has happen to Orlando. There were reasons behind it not being in Coffee County now Houston County is hearing the same story they had to listen to a few Months ago,yes it was exciting at first but then someone started thinking about it. The first thing someone says when they go somewhere like that, be it in Orlando,Nashville, or wherever "This sure is nice but I wouldn't want to live here" This is a business deal investments for the high rollers they want a return on there investment that's it.This will get into concerts at Ozark & Dothan not to mention the Peanut Festival they say they want have live acts during that time but it dosen't state that they will be completly closed either.Let them take it to the Florida panhandle like the investers wanted that way when your down there getting your Lottery ticket you can go see a concert & play Bingo sure let's build it here so our property taxes can be like Florida's.This is our Home!

We are allowing a handful of people decide how we should live. To gamble or not to gamble should be our choice. Crime will increase with the amount of people any way. The people of the county should decide the issue, not just a handful of ministers and county commisoners.

IN MY OPINION ITS RELIGIOUS LEADERS TEMPTATION THEY HAVE TO MAKE THE CHOICE TO GLORIFY GOD. AND FO THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT IT THERE, THEY AINT GOT TO. I BELIEVE WHEN IT'S BUILT WILL BRING MORE JOBS, ECONOMY, AND SUM EXTRA FORCES FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. THE PARKING IS MY ONLY CONCERN, HOWS IT GOING TO BE SET UP. BESIDES THAT I AM A RESIDENT OF ABBEVILLE, BUT I SAY "GO AHEAD WITH THE BUILDING OF COUNTRY CROSSING." Dustin

Posted by: sireli Location: dothan on Mar 8, 2008 at 11:21 AM
The church should stay seperate from the gov. This is a governmental decision and is not a religious leaders decision. I go to several casinos and while I am in town gambling I go out to eat, go shopping, catch a movie, fill up with gas, stay in a local hotel, etc. I spend two hundred gambling and three - four hundred just on the trip. Wow--look at the money I spend just to play the slots. Come on Dothan, its not just the casino that gets cash its the local market!!! Does your business need a boost? This could help, regardless of what others say, it does bring customers to the market. Pray on it.

Posted by: Bill on Mar 8, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Bingo! Is that the worst there is to worry about. No one will be made to go play bingo. A much greater concern is the impact it will have on life in and around Dothan. Look at what happened in Orlando!

Posted by: Gary Location: Dothan on Mar 8, 2008 at 09:46 AM
This Attraction will be good for Dothan and Houston County, Please support our County Commission " You gotta crack eggs to make an omlet "

I cant believe that people in Dothan will give up Country Crossings because of the bingo, what a bunch of uneducated people.I wish they would come here to Ozark.

Posted by: Doug Location: Dothan on Mar 8, 2008 at 07:16 AM
The Wiregrass needs Country Crossing. Maybe the religious leaders should worry more about the drunks and fornicators in their churches than bingo playing (outside the churches). Maybe they should also set up watches at the Florida and Georgia statelines to count the lottery and bingo playing church members in those states. Time to enter the 21st Century Houston County.

Posted by: RALT Location: ELBA AL on Mar 8, 2008 at 05:57 AM
DOTHAN AL CAN KEEP IT WITHOUT BINGO. IT WAS SO GOOD WHEN THEY WERE TAKING IT FROM COFFEE COUNTY

Posted by: Debbie Location: Dothan on Mar 7, 2008 at 10:48 PM
PLEASE think of this project for the greater good - it'll be good for the county, good for the city, good for us all. Progress and change are NOT inherently bad, folks.... PLEASE don't let this project slide away from us!! Support the decision the County Commission made, and welcome this project!

Posted by: betsy Location: Ashford on Mar 7, 2008 at 10:30 PM
This is what I think, The handful of people that always starts this moaning and groaning about our county and its progress should back the uhaul up to their door and go to where there is nothing. We do not need that kind of people in our county holding us back from growth and progress. I have faith that our commission will not let this get away.

Posted by: Ben T on Mar 7, 2008 at 09:32 PM
The love of money is the root of all evil! I didn't say that, that is in the book (The Bible) folks! I came from a state that has a lottery that was supposed to fix it all. It did nothing but drain the state. It hardy pays for its self. I don't know what is so great about this. The jobs will be low paying jobs. The will bring all the presonal with them that will make the big bucks. Be not deceieved Houston County will not get enough out to pay the law enforcement officers needed to patrol the grounds.

Posted by: debbie Location: dothan on Mar 7, 2008 at 07:31 PM
It's a crime to me that every time something that will help Dothan wants to locate here we have a handful of people that try to stop it. It is always the same group of people and this could make one wonder how much this negative groups gets for always throwing up road blocks. Does anyone else think it's time for them to back off? I DO!!!

Posted by: Tom Location: El Paso, TX. on Mar 7, 2008 at 07:24 PM
For crying out loud!!! Is there nothing other than BINGO that the crying near-do-wills can find to cause an up roar over? I say, build Country Crossing and restrict the BINGO to those who have done the crying. Then they will have a true bitch as they will be excluded! While you at it build the I-10 connector over their house rather than mine.

Posted by: Helen Location: Cottonwood on Mar 7, 2008 at 07:15 PM
WE NEED THIS COUNTRY CROSSING. WE NEED THE JOBS. PLEASE PLEASE DON'T LOSE THIS ONE. I AM TIRED OF THESE CHURCH GROUPS. PERHAPS THEY DON'T NEED TO HAVE THERE BINGO GAMES EITHER????? IF THIS DOES NOT GO THRU THEN THERE SHOULD BE NO BINGO..HUH???? THINK ABOUT IT
