The checks are getting ready to be sent out, but for some of you, there is a little extra work you need to do before you head to the bank.
Anyone who has no tax liability, but has at least $3000 dollars from earned income, social security benefits, certain railroad retirement or certain veteran's benefits, must fill out a special 1040A Tax Rebate Form.
"If they're single, they're eligible to receive a $300 payment. If they're married, filing a joint return, they're eligible to receive a $600 stimulus payment," says Linda Stiff, deputy commissioner for Services and Enforcement.
Also, anyone who has nontaxable combat pay on their 2007, 2008 income tax return must fill out a special 1040A.
To receive the stimulus payment this year, combat zone personnel or their spouses must file a 2007 income tax return by October 15th. Otherwise, they can claim the economic stimulus payment on next year's income tax return.
"We do not contact people by email. If anybody contacts you by website or telephone, you know it's bogus," says Individual Taxpayers Advisory Specialist Joe Rich.
The special 1040A form will not qualify you to pay taxes.
It’s only design is to get your current address and information so you can get the economic stimulus rebate.
"This person happens to be single (pointing to sample 1040A form). If they were married, the next name would be on the next line with a social security number. But the average person, if they take their time, would not take more than five minutes to fill it out. Just come in and we'll check it for them or fill it out for them," explains Rich.
For those filling out the 1040A forms, the IRS recommends direct deposit.
As for the rest of Americans that will get their check based off normal tax filing, expect to see it sent to you in the same fashion you received your tax refund.
This Saturday, from 9AM to 3PM, specialists will be on hand to help you file for your rebate.
It will be held at the IRS Office, located at 202 West Adams Street.
For those expecting to receive a tax rebate check, the time the checks will be sent depends on the last two digits of your social.
