Tiffany Deavers is a junior at Troy University and likes to come shoot hoops in her spare time, an activity she says can be difficult at times. "It gets kinda’ cramped, especially when there’s big games. A lot of students come and when they have elementary school night, it gets real cramped."

However, those cramped quarters will soon change, thanks to a gift given to the university by Milton McGregor.

McGregor is on the university's board of trustees and is donating $1 million dollars to the school to start the construction of a multi-purpose arena; it’s something many students are thrilled about.

Troy University Sophomore Ashley Dansby said, "There's a lot more students coming on campus. We are growing and [there] will be a lot more facilities for students to play basketball; do their activities [and] do their extracurricular activities."

Another Troy student added, "I think it’s wonderful. We host the high school tournaments every year and those get so packed out that people can't even stay to watch the tournament."

Officials with the school say the arena will play host to basketball and volleyball games, along with commencement, since the old building could only hold a certain number of people.

"You can only allow so many people to come in and you know, you've worked four or five years to get your degree, [so] who's to say you can only have four people here or five people here,” Deavers said.

McGregor's donation is the first to start off the project. It’s a gift many students are thankful to receive.

The multi-purpose arena is still in the design phase. There is no timeline yet on when the building will begin construction.
