Students will soon have another way to earn college credits from virtually any high school.
A new interactive video classroom or IVC is coming to 34 Southeast Alabama high schools. It will allow students to interact with college professors and college students at Troy University in real time. It’s the second phase of a web based concept.
Daleville High School Guidance Counselor Margie Treadwell said, “Now, not only can they get their high school credit, they can get college credit, and yet be able to transfer to any college that they want to enroll. So, that's a really exciting plus for us.”
Interactive video conferencing turns an ordinary classroom into a virtual learning experience.
Through the virtual environment, high school students, professors, and college students can share ideas and ask and answer questions.
Terri Miles, with Troy University said, “They will be able to learn from each other because the high school students are smart as well, and they may offer something to a college student that they haven’t thought of. That's the enrichment, to be able to combine the high school student with the college student by IVC.”
The summer curriculum will include English, History and Math. Fall course offerings will see the addition of Psychology, Advanced Math and Mandarin Chinese.
Daleville High School Student Zamora Figuerredo said, “I'm excited about the IVC programs because you get to experience the college life before you get to college and you get to get ahead on college credits.”
Between 4000 to 5000 students will participate in the pilot program this summer.
Eight to 10,000 are expected in the fall, and by 2010, all high schools in Alabama are expected to have an IVC.
.
Troy is now accepting applications for summer and fall enrollment.
