More efficient public transportation could be coming to Dothan.
City leaders are looking to install permanent bus routes to help you get around the city.
Nathaniel Lee has been a Wiregrass Transit Authority bus driver for 13 years now.
He remembers when the fare doubled to $2 bucks.
Now, he's about to witness another change.
City leaders are looking to have someone to survey the possibility of adding fixed routes.
"It's premature to say that it's going to happen, but we have asked the Transportation Authority to look into fixed routes. We're not talking a system where it's entirely fixed routes, but to modify the current system so there are perhaps a north/south access or an east/west access," says Dothan Mayor Pat Thomas.
"Who knows, if maybe the price for fuel continues to rise, fixed route bus systems will become more attractive to a lot more people," says Dothan City Manager Mike West.
While many of you may be looking forward to taking a seat on the bus, with the increased routes and fixed routes, comes and increased price tag.
"One thing you'll have to do with increased public transportation is increased costs. So, it's fine to want a great bus system, and we do, but you also have to be willing to pay for it," says Thomas.
If hired, the consultant will help determine where the bus routes will go, and where pickup and drop off points will be located.
However, it's something that will definitely take quite some time to complete.
"If it's going to help the public, I'm all for it. Anything to help the public, because that's what we are out here to do; a lot of people need transportation," says Lee.
The city recently added three buses to their current transit system.
That was done thorough an 80- 20 grant from the federal government.
Mayor Thomas says those buses will not be a part of the fixed bus route.
