Your old cell phone could help save someone's life in the near future.
Dorothy Kono spends most of her time outside in the yard and says sometimes, it’s scary not having a cell phone to call 911 if she's in an emergency situation.
"Being outside, I live alone. Sometimes, all the neighbors are out and gone and if I were to fall I would have to call," Kono says.
Kono and many others are happy to hear the news of a new program called SALT.
The program was recently launched in Henry County.
It’s mission? To give old cell phones to those in need.
Henry Co. Sheriff Will Maddox said, "You turn them into us, the Sheriff's Office, and we send them to the National Sheriff's Association to a bank where they will send us back refurbished cell phones, which will only dial 911."
Sheriff Maddox says the program is active in 34 states and began back in 1988.
He says SALT will benefit many of those in need of the phones. "It can be anything from domestic violence to the elderly living alone," he adds.
The program is at no cost to the department or to the community, which is something that Kono and many others are thankful for.
"They’re like me, they’re older residence and they need the protection like I do," Kono concludes.
Sheriff Maddox says all cell phones are welcome, even if they are broken.
He says he already has some phones collected, so the program is already off to a good start.
If you would like to donate your old phone or find out how you can help, call the Henry County Sheriff's Office at 334-585-3131.
