Woman power was in full force on Saturday in Newton when a group of ladies combined forces to raise the walls of a house.
Men weren't excluded from the site, but women- especially mothers and daughters-- were asked to participate for National Women's Build Week.
"These women are ready to work- they came here wholeheartedly and are getting the job done," said sales specialist Jennifer Scott.
Volunteer Coordinator Kendra Leonard says "We wanted to give the greatest gift of all… building a house for mom and daughter."
Carol Bonner and her 10-year-old daughter live in Wicksburg, but in about 20 weeks a home in Newton will be theirs.
"Words can't express how happy it makes me to know that Talor and I are finally going to have a home of our own.. She's already picked out stuff for her room,” said Bonner.
Project is made possible by a group who found women from churches, businesses and sororities.
Bridget Myracle, with Women Build Committee, said, “There's about 5 or 6 women on the committee and we raise 45,000 dollars in 18 months."
In order to receive a home- families must be living in substandard housing, donate 500 hours of their time, and be able to pay a low cost mortgage.
Resource Development Coordinator Sabrina Kirkland said, "We have families ranging from single males to grandparents with 6 children. its a wide open non discriminatory program."
Recipients of a home have to donate 500 hours of their time.
The development coordinator says that Carol has already given over one thousand hours of work over the past few years- making her more than qualified and deserving.
