MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A bill that would ban smoking in work places and many public settings in Alabama still has a chance of becoming law as the Legislature prepares for the final day of its 2008 session.

House Speaker Seth Hammett of Andalusia says the smoking ban will be one of the bills considered by the House on Monday, the final day of the session.

If the ban becomes law, the American Cancer Society says Alabama will join 26 other states that have some sort of smoke-free statewide law.

Gov. Bob Riley says he will sign the bill if it passes the Legislature. Riley says he quit smoking last summer.

yes! I pray this bill will pass. I work in a government building and am forced to inhale second hand smoke 5 days a week. HELP!!!

"Smokers" are the only ones causing such hostility. Let's face it! My mom as I said, is currently an ex-chain smoker. Now that she has stoppped smoking she can see how much damage it caused her and the stinch it imposes upon others. Its called "proof" not "prove" (Rights below) and yes, how many infants with RSV are admitted day after day from secondhand smoke alone?! You want proof?! Visit hospitals! You want proof? Call American Cancer Society and inquire about lung cancer from non-smokers who had spouse's that smoked. I also think that more "responsible" adults should sit in convenience store parking lots and report the clerks for selling to minors any tobacco products....

Oh please show me some one that you can prove without a shadow that has become sick from seconded smoke!!!!!And I will show you people that has DIED from someone drinking and driving...I smoke and iz do say no to smkeing in a car or a house with small children....Get off of smokers and get on something that really count like feeding the hungry...

More often than not, our gov't interferes when they should not. When they should take action they fail us. However, as a lifetime non-smoker, the gov't needs to step in on behalf of our future generations because many smokers are not responsible enough to know when and where they should not be smoking. I often see many parents and grandmparents smoking in vehicles with children (infants also), and the child cannot speak up for themselves! What's wrong with "you" people?! Second hand smoke is more toxic than if they were smoking themselves! My mom was a chain smoker from 15 to 65 and she quit cold turkey with a heart scare. Now the smell nauseates her and she can't go anywhere without coughing herself sick to be around it. She never thought she'd say it was sickening to be around second-hand smoke. Yes, I think buying tobacco should be as illegal as narcotics!

Why is it that the people and the government are so down on something but still receive benefits of sales in the form of so much taxes? Why not stop the production of tobacco if it is so bad? You know why? Because so many people and agencies make so much money from it. Thats why.

I DONT THINK THIS IS RIGHT...I THINK WE SHOULD BAN DRINKING TO... WHILE WE ARE AT IT LET STOP ALL THE BAD HABITS......GO AHEAD AND TAKE ALL OF OUR RIGHT AWAY...
