Dothan Police officers killed in the line of duty were remembered on Tuesday.

The ceremony is one of many being held across the country this week to honor fallen officers.

National Police Week is May 11th through the 17th.

It was a day for police, family, and members of the community to remember fallen heroes who are killed in the line of duty. It’s also a chance to honor the heroes who still answer the call everyday.

Dothan Police Captain Greg Benton said, “When you take this job, you don't just take it for the pay, it's actually a calling for those officers that give their lives for their communities; [that] says something special about every law enforcement officer.”

Four Dothan officers were remembered at Tuesday’s ceremony; Officer Hugh Horace Deshazo, Sergeant Shelby Owens, Lieutenant Robert Jackson and Corporal Robert E. Armstrong.

As keynote speaker, Alabama Attorney General Troy King says it's important to remember fallen officers and to push for tougher laws against criminals who attack cops.

“It's dangerous when you run from the police, dangerous to bystanders; that's why next year, we'll propose legislation that says if you assault a policeman in Alabama, you go to prison and you serve everyday of your sentence.”

There were a couple of bright moments during Tuesday’s ceremony.

A check for $15,000 dollars was presented for a memorial that will be built to remember fallen officers.

Another check in the amount of $2500 was given to the SWAT Team to purchase new gear.

So far this year, 35 police officers have died nationwide in the line of duty.

One of the officers was from Alabama.
