Two-weeks ago, the city of Dothan unveiled their new pilot recycling program called I-Recycle.

Since then, the response has been overwhelming. Many residents in the designated areas have signed up.

City Manager Mike West has been looking forward to a recycling program since he moved to Dothan. City officials designed the program so that recyclables will be picked up the same day trash is.

"We want people to think, when I push my trash out, i push my recycling out," West said.

Four-thousand blue bins are in storage at the city's bailing facility, and if the recycling program goes city wide, they may need more.

"Some of that was because of optimism; if we go city wide, which hopefully we will,” West continued.

For now, only certain neighborhoods will be participating, but if the whole city is involved, there is room for the program to grow.

Public Works Director Jerry Corbin said, "At this point and time, we don't have a market for glass; we may include that in future curbside recycling or create a drop off point for glass."

The program is still expected to begin in July when the truck comes in.

If you live in one of the selected areas, and haven't gotten a chance to send in your mailer, there is still time, but it must be in by next Wednesday.

If you are in a designated area, but have not received the mailer, you can call Cassandra Milton at 615-3107.
