MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Proponents of removing the state sales tax on groceries say they are still looking for enough votes to pass the bill on the final meeting day of the Legislature.

The proposed constitutional amendment is pending in the Senate Monday. The sponsors, Democratic Rep. John Knight and Sen. Hank Sanders, say the future of their proposed constitutional amendment is in flux.

The legislation would remove the state's 4 percent sales tax on groceries and raise the threshold where a family of four starts paying state income tax from $12,600 to $20,000. To make up for the lost revenue, their proposal would end the state's income tax deduction for federal taxes paid.

Sanders said he doesn't expect the Senate to try to address the grocery tax proposal until after it deals with the state education budget.

This whole exercise is just a Shell Game to dupe the public into thinking that the Government is going actually do something for the People for a change,,Most tax payers will loose money over this deal.
