Summer is considered the spending season with a lot of money going towards vacations. There are ways you can save an extra penny while having fun in the sun.

While you've worked all year for this time to relax, airline fuel surcharges and skyrocketing gas prices are making it hard for you to enjoy your summer vacation.

However, there are some things you can do to enjoy your time away from the office, without breaking your budget.

Julie Morgenstern, organizing and management expert, says "You have to be a little more conservative. If you change your habits over the summer, you're going to hit the fall feeling confident, ready and really energized, rather than panicky and feeling like you over did it."

One important tip for summer travelers is to only spend what you have. Don't rely on credit cards to get what you want on your getaway and set a road budget.

Figure out how much money you have to spend on a daily basis; that way, you won’t run out of money on the end of your trip.

But, one way to really make a dent in your travel expense is to stay home.

"Do a little research to figure out if there is park in your neighborhood you've never been to. Or find something that's right under your nose that you haven't seen before" says Evette Rios, Stay-Cation Design Guru.

"All you want to do is just change your perspective. It opens up your blinders and allows you to breathe. You can really enjoy your summer with very simple, local fun," says Morgenstern.

Of course, the main point of a vacation that shouldn't be cut from the list is the quality time you spend with your family.

Money managers say it's not about making drastic changes to your summer spending. It's just reducing the amount you spend and taking the small steps that really add up.
