Whether you are going to the beach to celebrate this Fourth of July or just across town, state troopers want you to know they will be working hard to keep you safe on the roads.
Alabama State Trooper Anthony Ellis says, "We have a lot of grant overtime, there will be the majority of our troopers will be on the road this weekend."
And though many people will be staying closer to home this holiday, troopers are still expecting a lot of commuters.
"We expect a lot of traffic, it was pretty busy yesterday, a lot of cars movin', I guess they were tryin' to get where they was goin', today it's been fairly light this morning so far, but we're expecting a lot of vehicle traffic."
Trooper Anthony Ellis says there will be check points all across the Wiregrass to prevent drunk driving.
"If you drive this weekend or during this holiday period and you are caught, you go to jail. there is zero tolerance for drunk driving, we have a special task force zero at the Dothan post, and we'll be utilizing it this weekend setting up check points and try to get impaired drivers off the road way."
A few of the troopers will be out in three brand new Dodge Chargers, which are lighter and faster than the traditional Crown Vic's.
"The Dothan post is slotted for three semi-marked Dodge Chargers, which is no light bars on top, any color paint scheme, the only identifying mark on the car is the state seal on the passenger side door"
But no matter what vehicle the troopers are in, they all share the same goal.
"Primary goal this weekend is traffic safety, making sure everyone gets to where they are going safely, that’s our primary goal, cut down on aggressive driving, speeding, just make sure everyone arrives alive to their destination"
Houston County plans on having twenty five to thirty troopers patrolling the roads this weekend.
