Now is the time to sign up to mentor during the upcoming Boys to Men Summit in Dothan.

The three-day event is sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

It is geared toward boys ages 12 to 17.

It’s being held July 31st through August 2nd at Greater Beulah Baptist Church.

The 100 slots for boys are already full, but organizers are still looking for 30-men to serve as mentors.

A familiar national face is scheduled to participate in the summit.

Event Organizer Rosalind James said, "Steadman Graham is a motivational speaker out of Chicago; we are excited to have him as our kick off speaker for our Boys to Men Summit."

The summit is designed to improve the academic success of young men in reading, math and science, and to increase parental involvement in their child's education.

For more information, you can call Rosalind James at 794-4108.

Kudos for your very needed summit. The hard part is finding the men to serve as mentors. I have a really hard time of finding men to serve. I’m the founder of a new, innovative literacy program called Boys Read. Boys Read’s mission is to transform boys into lifelong readers. We’re an organization of parents, educators, librarians, mentors, authors, and booksellers. A core objective of Boys Read is to establish Reading Tribes. Tribes are informal reading circles for pleasure and non-deterministic learning. They’re very similar to book clubs. Tribes are a great opportunity to bond with boys. A Tribe Leader acts as a mentor and facilitator for the Tribe. Parents, teachers, librarians, booksellers, coaches, and other community outreach programs and services organize Tribes. Our website features many extraordinary authors who have published numerous compelling and gripping novels that boys love. For more information about Boys Read, visit our website at boysread.org
