Alabama Survival Rates Rank Low
The Journal of the American Medical Association says Alabama ranks the lowest in survival rates. Dothan paramedics are looking to change that statistic. Posted: 1:47 PM Sep 24, 2008Reporter: Erica Proffer Email Address: erica@wtvy.com |

According to a new study, the chance of survival relies also on where you live.
The Journal of the American Medical Association reports Alabama has the lowest survival rate in the nation-- at three percent.
Seattle, Iowa and Portland are among the top ranked, at 16-percent.
But some local paramedics say that statistic doesn't adequately depict your survival chance in Dothan, with paramedics usually arriving within eight minute from the time of the initial call.
"When we arrive on scene we can go ahead and start them on o2, on our first cardiac drug line, we can put the on the monitor, we can put them on the 12 leads. So, 8 minutes into it, you're getting definitive care at home, in route, and we're relating the information to the doctors and the cardiologists"
All of the equipment inside the ambulance is made for one paramedic to use, but what makes Dothan special is that at all times there will be two paramedics with the patient providing extra care.
"I think the citizens of Dothan are very fortunate to have a great EMS service, pre-hospital care. I'd say it's probably one of the better in the state,"
The Dothan Fire Department responds with every ambulance call, and an ambulance service responds to each fire call, giving that extra protection to enhance your chance of survival of any emergency.
The study notes one reason behind Seattle’s high survival rate, is its emphasis on CPR and defibrillator training - not only for emergency crews but for the general public.
