Pelham, Georgia may soon become the golf cart capital of the world, because residents seem to be using golf carts instead of cars to get around.
Thanks to a new city ordinance several residents in Pelham are turning to golf carts as a fuel efficient way to get around town.
Tommy Palmer, a restaurant owner says, " I haul supplies from one restaurant to another because we are cramped for storage space here and it's actually saved me two hundred bucks."
John Taylor, Assistant VP of Family Bank says, " When they passed the golf cart law it really provides us with a highly visible form of advertising when we drive it around town."
City officials say using golf carts is not only fuel efficient but good for the budget.
"The city is utilizing it already in the sewage system, we have a cart on order for our meter reader, the meter reader logs more miles that any vehicle in the city," said Doug Westbury, Pelham City Manager.
Nealy McCormack, Pelham Police Chief says, "We had one of our carts our for five minutes before we made our first case. They're very effective, quiet ,they can move faster than someone can run so I think they will do quite well.
Aside from saving fuel, residents and city officials agree golf carts are bringing the community together and urge more people to make the switch.
Golf carts are only allowed on city streets and if they aren't equipped with basic safety equipment, driver's may get a ticket.
