These days, in order to protect themselves, many are hitting the stores to buy a handgun, but a large percentage of them don't know how to use one.

“95% of the people out there that own handguns today do not know how to operate those weapons or fire them, and that is dangerous really." Says Eddie Ingram,Barbour County Chief Deputy.

It’s dangerous, and scary. Especially since 89 per cent of those who use a gun to kill are not licensed.

Retailers are noticing a spike in handgun sales, but while they're cashing in, they can't help but wonder what happens when a customer leaves the store.

"We're selling a lot of handguns to people who have never handled a gun before. It makes me nervous handing over the gun to people and there is only so much you can tell them over the counter." Says Tony Taylor, Owner of Ace Hardware

Many people, both male and female are finding it more important to protect themselves, and each has their own reason.

"With the economy slowing down and everyone needing money, I think its time that people are going to start robbing you and take your property and money in order to fend for themselves. So I think if you are prepared and own a gun you could at least scare them off if you needed to." Says Whitney Ingram, a student.

"More women are raped or victimized in their own home.” Says student Lisa Ingram. “So if anything, its better to have a weapon in your home."

But of course these ladies want to learn the safest way to use their guns, and what better way to learn than from trained professionals.

"We teach them how to load and unload the weapon but safety features is my biggest priority. There is no use having a weapon if you can't utilize it."

Another thing that students were learning is the proper way to AIM, that way they can shoot their target every time.

"Law enforcement can't be everywhere. We're cutback. We're restricted, so you are going to have to look out for yourself because when something happens, most of the time, the police are not going to be there and its up to every person to protect yourself and you family."

Organizers say they would like to have more classes like these available at the store.

That way customers learn more about the weapon they are purchasing.
