Flowers Hospital is using digital mammography to detect calcifications and masses in breast tissue.
The machine is faster at taking pictures and the image quality is much higher than the old standard X-ray.
The intuitive cad system detects masses and flags them for the radiologist.
Unfortunately, the system still uses compression which causes discomfort for some patients.
Technicians use mammo pads to help take the edge off the pain.
Doctors say the higher resolution allows them to make a diagnosis faster and helps eliminate misreads.
“If there's a small mass we can detect it a little bit earlier with digital mammography rather than regular mammography, especially in younger women and women who have dense breast tissue., some of those cancers may have gone undetected,” said Dr. Scott Bolton\ Radiologist, Flowers Hospital
Flowers Hospital is currently the only location in Dothan to offer this new technology.
