City of Dothan Will Not Obtain Liquor License
The City of Dothan will not be making up for lost revenue by selling liquor. Posted: 6:54 PM Nov 18, 2008 |

Two-weeks ago, commissioners decided to move forward with discussion about the city applying for a liquor license but at Tuesday’s meeting the tune was much different.
All six Dothan city commissioners fell silent when the issue of applying for a City of Dothan liquor license was brought up at Tuesday’s city commission meeting.
Dothan City Manager Mike West said, "With no motion being made today we don't know whether it was the city being involved with alcohol sales, and we need to determine that before we bring the issue back up."
The city was considering applying for a liquor license to provide alcohol to private parties held at several city facilities like water world, the Dothan Civic Center, Dothan Opera House and Westgate Tennis Center. Now that the motion has died, it seems business at some facilities may be hindered.
District Six Commissioner Keith Seagle said, "There is some concern that some parties won't be continue to be booked in the Civic center, in the past the city has contracted with a local vendor to do this and I think that's the way to go."
Seagle was not the only person at the meeting in opposition of the move. Tuesday's lack of a motion means the issue will not move forward.
Seagle said, "I'm afraid we're trading a short term need for a long term liability and we would incur the possibility for training, transporting and selling and I don't think the city of Dothan needs to be in the liquor business."
The sale of alcohol could have been a major revenue generator for the city, now they will have to rely on private vendors to sell alcohol at city events.
The possibility that the issue will arise again in the future seems unlikely after not one of the six commissioners or Mayor Pat Thomas chose to offer comments on the issue during the meeting.
The liquor license would only have been valid for private city events.
The city was hoping to open up more business opportunities for it's properties by offering the service.
