Students here at Vivian B. Adams School in Ozark will no longer board any ordinary bus.
Roger Haburey, a student, says, "When you compare the old ones that didn't have all the equipment we have today, it’s a lot safer, probably 90 percent safer than the old ones."
Roger Haburey is one of many students who will be riding on one of the eight new buses the school has received.
Transportation organizer Mikey Outlaw says it was time for new buses, as the old ones had seen better days.
Outlaw says, “We had some as old as 18 years old and our routes, we consist of 12 routes a day, total mileage of routes that these 12 buses drive per day, we deliver about a thousand to one thousand fifty miles a day."
Bigger windows, cameras, shoulder and lap seatbelts are just some of the new safety features on the bus.
Parents like Bill Kamerer say the new safety measures help him feel more at ease, knowing his daughter is buckled up on the bus.
He says, "That's been one of my major concerns, making sure that our buses are safe and she has to ride it so, it really strikes home when we have problems."
Haburey says, "I do this, just lock it down like you do in the front seat like you do in most of your vehicles and when this bus goes over, no problem I'm still in the seat."
And while many hope that never happens, if it does, they say they feel better knowing tier school buses are better equipped to handle it.
Each school bus costs about $90,000 each.
Because the school is not a part of the city or county, funds were taken out of the general fund to pay for the vehicles.
Officials say they should last seven to 10 years.
The old school buses are going up for auction on the Government Deals website.
