Pediatricians are calling for better-designed shopping carts and stricter government regulation to keep children from getting hurt.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says more than 24,000 children were treated for cart-related injuries last year.

The group says many carts have a high center of gravity and making them easy to tip over.

“Until they’ve developed a safer shopping cart, that is the only way to at least cut down on the risk of your child falling out of the cart,” said Dr. Carl Ramsay of Maimonides Med. Center.

Many cart injuries are dangerous and even life-threatening.

The academy says a typical accident has a child tumbling four feet onto a hard supermarket floor, causing head and neck injuries.
