Prostitution, murder, drugs, fatal wrecks and fires all made plenty of headlines in 2008.

Dothan police held a reverse prostitution sting that landed nine people in jail.

"If we can eliminate the johns from being around, the girls are going to go someplace else. We don't want it in our city," says Dothan Police Chief John Powell, July 11.

Fatalities started early in the year.

In the first half of the year, a teenager was killed in a hunting accident in Shorterville.

A friend shot and killed his 15-year old friend while dry firing a gun.

A 39-year old man killed a teenage girl while fleeing police.

"We have suspicion to believe that there was sexual contact between Mr. Wills and the victim of this case," says Andy Hughes, January 28.

"People make mistakes, but that was a big one. She was only 14, just turned 15, and I know what was going on," says Terry Lake, September 30.

A couple of Dothan police officers were shot during an armed robbery.

"We have to minimize the risk for everybody," says Officer Thomas Davis, March 31.

An argument between boyfriend and girlfriend turned deadly when the woman's cousin got involved.

"Joshua followed her, knocked on the door of the house and Dixie Wood opened the door and stabbed him in the chest with a small steak knife,” Henry County Sheriff William Maddox, April 2.

A widow spoke out about her unsolved husband's murder case.

"My children would like to know because they want to know that the bad guys are not out there," says Ginger Griffin, July 30.

Fatal wrecks claimed many Wiregrass lives.

A Houston County inmate was killed during transport, and the Wiregrass mourned the loss a head football coach.

"I know Heaven has just gained a good football coach" says Ricky Herring, July 30.

Luckily not all were fatal.

A school bus carrying nearly 50 kids overturned in Midland City.

"I was terrified. I was absolutely terrified," says Heather Parrish, August 12.

Fatal fires gutted some Wiregrass homes in the Bellwood community, to Enterprise, Dothan and Samson.

"The older model mobile homes, once they're fully involved, within 10 minutes time, they'll be virtually destroyed," says Samson Fire Chief Johnny Windham, January 28.

Police and sheriff's deputies all over the Wiregrass took countless amounts of drugs off the streets.

Dothan arrested many suspected drug dealers on "circle city crackdown."

“I would say it's wide spread inside the City of Dothan, in the country ads well as across the country. Narcotics are something that has permeated our society," says Dothan Police Chief John Powell, April 25.

Chipley Police turned weeks of investigation into a round up of meth and crack cocaine.

"It's a never ending cycle of taking folks off the street dealing drugs," Chipley Police Chief Kevin Crews, September 16.

Houston County Sheriff's Deputies seized over 40 pounds of packaged marijuana.

"They're coming from the boarder area to Atlanta," says Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes, August 4.

Barbour County Sheriff's Deputies continued making numerous drug busts.

"We’re starting to make a dent in it," says Barbour County Chief Deputy Eddie Ingram, December 1.

Even some "black magic" couldn't stop Geneva county deputies from catching some suspected crack cocaine dealers.

While we expect to have similar headlines in 2009, maybe this year will be filled with more joy and less crimes and fatalities.
