July 14th district one residents have the chance to re-elect Larry Matthews as their Dothan city commissioner or they could choose new comer Kevin Dorsey, but the options don't stop there.
Also running is Earnest Rhodes who ran in the past; George Williams Jr. who was commissioner from 1991-2001; and James Reading, who filled the gap between Williams and Matthews from 2001-2005.
Each candidate has his own unique plan of action if he gets elected.
Each was asked, ‘What is your top priority if you get elected into office?’
"To bring some sanity back to City Hall and common sense. Right now, we just have a quagmire. Nothing is getting done. People expect us to go down there and be civil with one another and conduct city business in a professional manner and I will strive to get us out of this quagmire," said James Reading, Former District 1 Commissioner.
“One thing I would like to do is talk about Youth Education and family; Looking after crime prevention, obese prevention for our youth. There is program through the national league of cities that give free discount prescription drug cards. If people do not have insurance or anything, you can get this card, it will have the city seal, and it’s free," said Larry Matthews, Current District 1 Commissioner.
"To be more accessible, making myself more available for the people of the community in District 1. Not only addressing or answering their questions but addressing their concerns," said Kevin Dorsey, District 1 Candidate.
"Within a year I will make sure with everything else I have done prior to that time, making sure that they receive sewage, water and electricity and I will also go into the inner part of my district, meet with the people which I have already started doing and find out what things they want the most in the areas that we have already laid the foundation to," said George Williams Jr., former District 1 Commissioner.
But why should the people of district one vote for you?
"Because I am the most qualified candidate. I am the most informed candidate. Weather you like me personally or not, I feel that I am better able to present and articulate the views and the objectives of all the people in district one," said Reading.
“I serve the community more than just on the commission. I'm on the board of the Houston Boys and Girls Club HRDC Human Resource Development Cooperation which looks out for our seniors; the boys club. I try to participate and be involved with other organizations like T.O.P.S. I am on the board of the national Peanut Festival; Past President of the Wiregrass Lions Club, The Multicultural Club. Ask my opponents- how much do they serve in this community other than just wanting to be a commissioner?" said Matthews.
“I am qualified number one and I am more in touch with the community. I have a unique relationship with the youth in different civic organizations. Also through my leadership as a sports supervisor with the city of Dothan Leisure Services and my life is an open book. I am pleased with it and I understand the fears of the people of district one,” said Dorsey.
“I was called on by the people of Dothan. They came back to me and they want me to return the type of progress that we had going up until the year of 2002. Good example- Here on Highway 431, in 2001 I brought in a 1.2 million dollar sewage connection from young America sub division to landmark school and Westgate Extension," said Williams.
Earnest Rhodes was unavailable for comment.
News 4 called him a countless number of times and left numerous messages but those calls went un-returned.
According to the city clerk's office, he ran for this seat in previous years, but has never been elected.
Tomorrow news 4's Ryan Rodig will speak with Paul Lee and Kenneth Everett- candidates for district 3.
