A Dothan man serving in the Alabama National Guard was wounded yesterday when a fellow soldier allegedly opened fire on Fort Hood, Texas.
13 people were killed and the Wiregrass man was among the more than 30 injured.
Major Randy Royer of the 135th expeditionary sustainment command based in Birmingham was shot twice during Thursday’s shooting spree.
Neighbors say it's one of those situations that you don't think could happen to someone you know.
No one was home at the family home, but neighbors say last night, Royer's brother came to the home and picked up the wounded soldier's wife, Trisha.
The two then took off for Texas to be with Randy as he recovers from his wounds.
Royer's National Guard unit was at Fort Hood training before shipping out to Afghanistan.
Major Royer suffered shoulder, leg, and knee injuries in yesterday's attack and those wounds are not life-threatening.
The couples have two children and neighbors say it's a pleasure to live on the same street as the Royers.
“Randy is a great guy, he's the kind of neighbor that you'd want to have, he'll give you the shirt off his back. We did get some word that he is doing good and that he's going to be ok. But the people are very concerned because everyone around here really likes randy and his family and they're good solid folks,” said neighbor Don Carter.
Mr. Carter said he's been neighbors with the Royer family for the past five years.
Carter added that when Royer wasn't serving in the military, he worked at Michelin Tire Company here in Dothan.
It's still unclear what caused a soldier to allegedly open fire on his comrades at Fort Hood.
