The Alabama Legislature convenes today for it's final workday of the Regular Session.
Lawmakers are trying to agree on a state General Fund Budget.
The General Fund provides money for most non-education functions of state government, like state troopers, prisons and Medicaid.
Lawmakers are also looking at a cigarette tax hike, higher fees for filing most types of civil court cases, and higher severance taxes on oil and natural gas for one year to balance the budget.
Senator Jimmy Holley tells News 4 this is the most challenging budget year he's seen in his nearly 30 years at the capital.
Governor Bob Riley says if any of the revenue bills are defeated, a Special Session will be necessary. Riley says that would cost taxpayers $400,000.
