Wiregrass farmers continue to struggle with this year's crop.
Still, acres of cotton and peanuts remain in the field and with each passing day they lose value.
Congressman Bobby Bright is co-sponsoring a bill to help farmers who are suffering major crop loss.
He visited a farm in Midland City Friday.
Wiregrass farmers gathered around Congressman Bright Friday to voice their concerns about this year's crop failure.
Wiregrass Farmer Fred McKay said, "It looks pitiful right now. The wind and rain makes more cotton fall to the ground and it clearly hurts."
Congressman Bright visited the Wiregrass to better understand how the crops are fairing after all the rain.
Congressman Bobby Bright said, "They've got needs; much of their crops have been devastated by the rains we've received. It was unexpected. We all thought we were going to have a wonderful year."
At least 30 percent of crops have to be unsalvageable in order for an area to be declared a disaster. Congressman Bright says after what he's seen, Alabama should have no problem meeting that requirement.
If the disaster declaration does not move through Congress by the end of the year, farmers in the Wiregrass may have to wait one to two years before receiving the financial assistance they need.
