Houston County attorney Gary Sherrer recommended to the commission today that the rules and regulations of bingo be re-worded in the county's guidelines.

As we know, there has been a lot of confusion in the state as to if electronic bingo is legal or illegal and based on what the Supreme Court judge ruled on in the white hall case.

The Houston County commission agreed to change the way bingo rules and regulations are written in Houston County to better comply with the Supreme Court’s definition.

This comes from matching charitable bingo opinions in cornerstone, and St. Claire County, Alabama.

"The language, in relation to the definition, I believe is just an effort by them to recommend to us that we do the best thing as part of the law. The Supreme Court has established this definition and so we felt like we needed to have that definition in our rules and regulations" said Mark Culver, Houston County Commission Chairman

There are 6 characteristics that must apply to the game that specify how each player is responsible for him or herself, each player cannot play alone and there has to be a bingo card present with numbers and letters.

But do these points apply to electronic bingo?

"We have a certification from an independent testing lab that specifically on point states the electronic player stations here in Houston County comply with the Cornerstone ruling" said Culver.

Meanwhile, those who oppose electronic bingo don't think anything other than paper cards is what the law originally describes.

"I don't think this is what the people of Houston County originally voted on, I don't think this is what the Supreme Court has said is legal. I think this is a way of getting around the laws of the land" said Pastor Ricky Plummer of Bethel Baptist Church

How does this affect country crossing? Well the establishment remains closed but the county says they feel the operation is legal.

Mark culver says the commission believes they are within the law, but because the governor's task force does not agree, developers think it is best to stay closed until the courts grant them protection.
