BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The record-setting heat wave that sent temperatures up to a dangerous 103 degrees in Montgomery and registered a heat index of 114 degrees in Florala is expected to be even worse tomorrow Friday.
The National Weather Service's office in Birmingham, in a statement today, said based on current forecasts many locations will see the hottest temperatures in many years.
The good news: After Friday, a weak front may usher in slightly lower temperatures Saturday.
Record heat was recorded in several cities yesterday. It was 103 degrees in Montgomery, Anniston and Pinson. The 102 degrees in Tuscaloosa tied a record set in 1954.
Coupled with the humidity, the triple-digit temperatures produced a heat index at most locations of 105 degrees or more.
Alabama Power, the state's largest electric utility, set a new record at 4 p.m. yesterday with 12,469 megawatts. That broke Monday's record of 11,994 megawatts. It was the first time Alabama Power's demand has ever topped 12,000 megawatts.
Most of Alabama is under a heat advisory until 7 p.m.
