PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a middle school student in the Florida Panhandle who died after losing consciousness during a PE class suffered from a heart condition.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office identified him Wednesday as 11-year-old James Leverette.
Authorities say the medical examiner's preliminary findings show Leverette had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart disease in which a portion becomes hypertrophied, or thickened, without any obvious cause.
The final finding will be released after the medical examiner's office receives toxicology results.
Authorities say Leverette was running uphill Tuesday when he lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
