With rising gas prices, consumers are looking to get the most bang for their buck. News 4 sheds some light on some money-saving gas tips.
Meet Steve and Jim; they’re Thursday’s participants in Fill ‘Er Up 101, a little fact or fiction class on News 4. The teacher is Critt Snellgrove with Alabama State Weights and Measures. He makes sure gas pumps give you every ounce, and Thursday, he confronts some gas myths, like can being heavy on the trigger cost you?
Motorist Jim Cherry asked, "If you squeeze the trigger all the way, it could cost you more; is that true?”
Snellgrove responded, “Doubt it; it's gonna’ cost you anyway.”
Motorist Steve DePriest said, “Our vehicles, you have to put ‘em in slow anyway, but I don't know if it makes any difference or not."
"No sir,” Snellgrove said. “That's one of the things we check for; we check the nozzles at all pressure to make sure it's pumping a gallon when it's supposed to."
Snellgrove verifies that five gallons is five gallons, using his equipment. However, does that equipment need to be temperature corrected, say those who suggest getting gas early in the morning?
"Some ole’ tale that someone came up with the gas only travels from the tank to the pump and the tank is going to remain at the same temperature all the time, so there might be some difference, but not enough to make a difference in your car," Snellgrove says.
Another question: “What about when the station itself is filling up? I’ve been told by some to stay away from gas stations when their tanks are being filled.”
"It might stir up some sediment; it might be a good rule to wait 23 minutes if you see a tanker filling up a gas station," Snellgrove added.
