The Food and Drug Administration has approved Prozac for use in children with depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

FDA made Prozac the first drug in its class to be allowed for use in children, and the third for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Psychiatrists had been prescribing the world's best-known antidepressant and similar competitors to their youngest patients for years. They did this despite a shortage of studies proving the drugs work in children.

FDA now said there's finally proof that Prozac alleviates depression in children eight years and older.
