You've got phone numbers, pin numbers, and fax numbers, but the numbers you really need to know are your cholesterol numbers.

The centers for disease control reports that 60 percent of the population with elevated cholesterol levels are unaware their numbers are too high, and, of those who know, only seven-percent are getting within the recommended limit.

Research shows that cholesterol-lowering statins that achieve the most dramatic reductions in these LDL or bad cholesterol numbers provide the greatest benefit to patients.

Statins block the production of enzymes used by the body to make cholesterol.

While aggressive lifestyle changes like losing weight, modifying diet, increasing exercise and stopping smoking can help, they aren't always enough for most to lower their cholesterol; medical intervention might be required.

If you have elevated cholesterol, go see your physician to determine a treatment option that is best for you.

Some statins include Crestor, Lescol, Pravachol, Lipitor, Zocor and Mevacor.

Over half of adults have cholesterol that is too high, so take control of your cholesterol by working with your doctor to set a target goal.
