Dothan residents are one step closer to having new requirements for pet owners in the city.

The Animal Control Ordinance Committee is set to approve several mandates for pet owners.

The committee has been mulling over proposals for the control of the city's pets.

Monday night, they expect their changes to pass a committee vote so the ordinance can be presented to the city commission for a final decision.

The document is lengthy and it has many revisions, but Dothan’s new animal ordinance is ready for a vote by the Animal Ordinance Committee.

The most notable items are laws governing annual registration of pets, spay and neutering requirements, and dangerous dog guidelines.

Owners would be required to pay $10 dollars for neutered and spayed dogs and cats, $30 dollars for non-neutered dogs and cats, $250 dollars for dangerous dogs and $2 dollars for all other pets.

Dothan City Commissioner John Craig said, “[We looked at] various ordinances from around the country and we took what we thought was a fair price for what [had] to be done.”

A major reason for registration is to ensure all dogs and cats are vaccinated for rabies. It would also help the city monitor spaying and neutering practices.

Craig says it costs the city around $25,000 a week to handle stray animals and he's hoping that the new regulations will help cut costs as well as reduce strays. “We would appreciate all the people of the city, both animal owners and non animal owners to approach this thing with a fair and open mind and let emotion stay on a clam level,” he added.

The informational meeting is open to the public; however, no more changes will be accepted at this time.

Any future changes will have to go through an amendment process. Anyone unhappy with any of the proposed regulations should contact their city commissioner.

Craig says that the point of registration has not been determined yet. They may look to local veterinarians to help with the process of gathering information.

i think if you have a fenced in yard that you should not have to pay this fee. i can understand that if you do not have a fenced in yard than yes i agree that this is a good idea. this is saying that i put up a chainlink fence for nothing, further more i would have to pay 90 dollars for my 3 dogs this is stupid.

this is just another example of taxation without representation. Why are you penilizing everyone for what some pet owners do or better yet don't do.How many people will the city have to hire to go door to door and find out what pets are spayed/neutered are what pets were there the last time they came by. Also About checking vet records alot of people use vets in ozark Headland and Cottonwood just to name a few.Its all about the money plain and simple.Theres just as much evidence that shows it will also increase the number of pets killed at the shelter But again we will not get the chance to vote on the issue.

Mr. Craig should never been put in charge of the dog ordinance because yiu could see from the start he did not like cats or dogs. He was appointed by our Mayor who is about as dumd as he is. They should not let a biased per be in charge of any committee just a nother screw up by our ram it down your throat commissioners and mayor . I dont believe the animal people in Dothan will go along with this so mr. Craig enjoy your one term.

I don't understand why everyone is so against having to register their animals. I grew up in a town that had similar regulations, and they were so successful in reducing the stray population that the shelter is now a no-kill. Registration fees will help pay for animal control officers, an adequate shelter, and proper care of strays. If more pet owners actually cared, they wouldn't be allowing their animals to breed indiscriminately and contribute to and cause the overpopulation. I guess this "culture and community" is one that really doesn't care about animals. $10 a yr to register your pet really isn't much, and is normally included in the cost of the rabies vaccine. It's a small contribution to helping control and care for the stray animals in the community.

I can't decide if the Committee thinks we're New York City or pre-WW2 Germany, but they are clearly out of touch with their community and culture. All my cats & dogs are spayed/neutered, controlled, and vaccinated but their proposal will cost me more money for their benefit. They need to deal with the problems, not penalize responsible citizens.

I believe that this ordinance is just another way for the city to gain revenue. We just had a one cent sales tax added, and now they are in need of more revenue. I could understand a one time fee for the life of the animal, but not a yearly one. The people that should be paying these fees are the people that do not restrain their animals and let them run free. I also believe that if this ordinance is passed by the Dothan City Commission, the animal owners of Dothan, should do what ever is possible to change the City Commission in the upcoming elections. I urge all citizens to contact their current City Commissioners and ask them to vote "NO" on this ordinance. The number of animals reported by Mr. Craig is skewed. 2000 animals divided by 365 days is only 5.47 animals a day. The cost of $25,000 a week is to high unless the animals are fed ribeye steaks. Give animal owners of Dothan a break! Please, enforce the laws currently on the books. Rabie reporting should be done by the Vets.
