Many of us are cutting corners to make ends meet, but locally, store managers say it isn't affecting gift buying for Mother's Day.

However, many shoppers are taking the Mother's Day gift trend in a new direction.

    Renisha Palmer works at Target.

She moved back to Dothan from Birmingham to spend more time with her family.

She says that's the most important thing in her life, so she definitely is looking forward to Mother's Day.

And, her customers are doing the same.

"It's been really a boost for going all out for mom," says Palmer.

Instead of customers buying jewelry and flowers, workers say shoppers are turning more to clothing and electronics.

"Retail chains have hurt a little bit, but electronics have stayed about the same. Most electronics have really become a necessity, not a luxury, like cell phones. I think their sales have stayed pretty competitive," says Steve Greenburg, with "Innovation Insider."

At Northcutt's on Main, Rene Scott says she's seen a lot of people already looking for that perfect Mother's Day gift.

"We're selling a lot of jewelry, candy, bath products and Very Bradley bags; everybody wants to remember their mother," says Scott.

Also, workers at Paper Moon Scrapbooking say they've seen more business, due to many people wanting to get creative with their Mother's Day gifts.

Some are building scrapbooks and photo albums for their mothers and grandmothers.
