The Dothan Police Department is responding to a growing number of residents’ complaints about running red lights.
The problem is becoming more prevalent in the area, and now, residents have one more reason to obey those laws.
Police are now actually staking out intersections to slow down the problem. Not only will running that light earn you a ticket, but it also puts other drivers and yourself in danger.
Sergeant Anthony Westberry is spending more time pulling over drivers for running red lights. The problem has become a bigger issue in just the last month.
"Traffic lights are not a hindrance, they're there to facilitate the flow of traffic through the intersections and if you run red lights you run risk of hitting another vehicle," Sergeant Westberry says.
The increase in patrols, monitoring this situation is in direct response to local resident complaints.
"I have been contacted by constituents who have noticed an increase and they're contacting their commissioners," District 6 Dothan City Commissioner Keith Seagle said.
Dothan Police have written more than 100 tickets in just nine days in effort to deter drivers from running red lights.
"Periodically during the day, we are observing intersections throughout the city to see if there’s anyone violating the law by running red lights,” Sergeant Westberry added.
The department has no plans of slowing down the increased patrols in the near future, so be sure to follow those traffic laws.
