Florala residents believe it's just a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or even killed by a stray dog.

Florala residents simply let their dogs' wander the neighborhood. That's despite a leash law in effect, which states a dog must be on a leash if out in the public.

Glenda Fountain, a Florala resident, says her nieces have almost been killed by these animals.

"They have two or three dogs roaming here. One killed a small dog on a chain, and I would think it could just as easily have attacked a child," says Fountain.

Chief Mark Anderson with Florala Police says it's a real problem and getting worse.

“The city does not have the funds for an animal control officer. It is a disaster waiting to happen,” Chief Anderson said. "You have a child going to his bus stop, he's attacked by a dog, and then you have a pack mentality and that child is being mauled."

At this time, stray animals must be transported nearly 30-miles away to a shelter in Andalusia.

Florala Mayor Danny Franklin tells News 4, he expects the town council to revisit animal control following several recent dog bite incidents.

actually there is no where to put the stray dogs when they are caught., the nearest shelter is in Andalusia, which is 30 miles away., and the City of Florala does not want to pay the expense of going to Andalusia, and they don't have the spare man power. True they do need to start fining the owners, that would eliminate some of the strays.

Maybe the police should be fining the people who let their dogs roam free. Also, the old man in Cowarts needs to realize what he's talking about is a felony in this state. Maybe I should use a 20 cal. on him.

There is a way to get rid of all stray dogs. It's called a 22 cal. Automatic. Works wonders in my area.
