The two candidates vying for the Republican nomination in next month's runoff stumped for votes in Enterprise.

The Republican Women of Coffee County sponsored a forum for the candidates involved in the July 15th runoff.

State Senator Harri Anne Smith and Montgomery Representative Jay Love survived a crowded primary field to fill the seat being vacated by the retirement of incumbent Congressman Terry Everett.

Besides his legislative background, Love touts his experience as a small businessman who operates a restaurant chain.

"As a small businessman, who has met payroll and with my legislative experience in dealing with, and working with a diverse group of people, I feel most qualified to hold the congressional seat," said Love.

With more than a decade in the legislature, Senator Smith says she would make the best choice for Congress.

Over the years, the Geneva County native has had one of the most conservative voting records in Montgomery.

"I have 10 years of experience in the Alabama Senate. I have served as mayor and I have been president of the Wiregrass United Way, showing leadership," said Smith.

With some 16-counties, the U.S. second congressional seat is the largest land district in the state.

The winner of the Love-Smith runoff will face Democratic Challenger and Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright in the November general election.
